We had a 2006 mini van that we needed to sell that was getting up there in miles. We have a bunch of kids and they had left their mark. There were also a couple of minor mechanical issues, like an oil leak, and though they were minor, the quotes we were getting to fix it seemed high. My wife and I just didn't know how we would sell it without it being a huge hassle or taking a big hit because it wasn't going to show well.
We knew the owner of Maverick personally and he has a reputation for being an extremely honest and fair person. So, we asked him for help. He said, he would take the car on consignment for us. He agreed to clean it up, make the repairs it needed, get it ready to sell and consign it at his dealership. He agreed to get us the price we wanted, and then told us what he would try to sell it for, so we could see what he would make. He also agreed to repair it for us and just factor that into the pricing. Everything was very transparent. If he could sell it for more, fine with us. If it wasn't selling, we would know and we could ask him to lower the price at any point. It sounded like a perfect solution.
So, we dropped the car off. He made all of the repairs at a fraction of the cost and we didn't have to come up with any cash. This allowed us to sell it for more. We stopped by the lot and looked at our van; it looked great after they got done with it and everything was fixed. He let us know as people took it for test drives, and gave us feedback. He worked as a partner with us in selling it. It was great. A little while later we got a call and it was sold.
The next thing we knew, we had a check in the mail for the amount we had agreed to. It was a painless experience. It was the perfect way to leverage a car dealership's ability to sell and get the price I would expect by selling it on my own. I don't think I'll ever sell a car any other way.
